4 Small Changes to Start off New Month

Most people's signal of change comes from the ending of the year. It's almost as if we're computers that get switched on, on January 1 and only get to restart once a year, 365 days later when December 31 rolls around. I don't know about you, but I've already restarted my computer twice today- and it isn't even 1pm.
Humans and computers are alike in that sense, we both need to recharge, reboot and restart to keep moving quickly and efficiently. Some people like to reflect and make necessary changes to their year at the end when the tinsel and talk of Christmas are upon us, but others, like me, like to make small changes throughout the year- particularly at the start of a new month. So, with that, 'Hello there, February'.

#1 Log-Out of Social Media 
In reality, this only works for about half the month. Eventually, as the 'new month, new me' magic wards the month's midpoint I tend to find myself endlessly scrolling again, but the first half is definitely different. I still allow myself to log onto social media (because cold-turkey isn't exactly an option in my life) but I find that because I can't endlessly scroll easily because I have to re-login, I tend to avoid it. It does wonders to free up my time and my eyes from the screen.

 #2 Plan At least Two Things to Look Forward To
Life gets busy. When you have to balance uni with blogging and the added stresses of work and balancing a social life, life can slip away from you. I make a point of planning at least two things that I'm really excited about so that I know that I have something to keep me going when the 'new month mojo' is diminishing and I need a lil' boost. For February, I've planned a trip to Brighton which I'm really looking forward to, and a friend's 21st birthday whom I haven't seen in a while toward the end of the month. I try to space out the plans, too.

#3 Check My Bank Balance
I know, I know. Most students avoid their bank balance like the plague- and trust me, sometimes I do, too. Particularly when Whetherspoons, nightclubs and places like Frankies and Benny's beckon me. However, at the start of each month, particularly, I like to know exactly where I like to know exactly where I stand- and some months when I under-spend and a few pounds roll over, I know I can treat myself to a less-student-like meal.

#4 Clean My Room
My room is pristine by most student's standards. But, at the start of each month (and a couple of times thereafter, I like to give my room a full clean- luckily that doesn't end up looking like a makeover. I wash and change my bedding, get Henry the Hoover to suck up all remnants of the last month on the floor, I spritz my windows, mirror and basin and re-organise my desk. It's a lot of work but if you're in the mood to clean- or procrastinate- I highly recommend this.

#4 Paint my nails, Shave my legs
Do know how often I shaved my legs in January (That's a question I never thought I'd ask on the internet)? Twice. At the beginning...and somewhere in the middle. Now, by no means do I mean that people need to shave their legs. It's a preference and one that I like when I've done it but can't care to do often enough. 
However, painting my nails is another story altogether. That I could do over and over and over again. I think I'm starting off February with a light shade of grey- because why not.

  1. I love the logging out of social media one! I try to have a day a week where I don't go on. Love cleaning your room bit. I really need to clean mine. I wish I could only shave my legs twice a month. I have ballet on Tuesdays so I shave once a week during the winter. And I always try to have something to look forward to! This month I have the Dwayne Gretzky concert and my birthday! Nothing in March yet! You look super cute in your top and skirt!

  2. I should really try to do at least #2 Plan At least Two Things to Look Forward To every month. This month I actually have two things to look forward to. Meeting a good friend I haven't seen in ages and going skiing with old friends. :) Looking forward to both.

  5. Small changes often add up, and I couldn't agree more to yours! I should definitely check my bank account more often haha, but also have a look at my expenses - and finally admit that I spend way too much money on coffee and cake. Logging off social media is a great one too, although so difficult, especially when you're blogger!

  6. This is a great post Steph! I wish I could log out of social media, I love it too much though! I don't let it completely take over my life so I don't mind going on for a big everyday.

    This month I've challenged myself to drink a litre of lemon water every day. So far, it's going well and I'm seeing an improvement to the skin on my face which is great!

  8. I definielty use the start of a new month as a fresh slate as well, I used to more when I used a habit tracker but I haven't made one of those in a while. Stuff like cleaning my room and painting my nails I tend to do weekly to set me up for the week, but stuff like staying off social media I tend to do less. I think I might try giving myself some things to look forward to in the month, just to keep me going. It's kind of similar to how I'm trying to do something that pushes me to overcome my anxiety at least once a month. Lovely post as always Steph x
