She Caught The European Travel Bug...

*Cough cough*
I think I've caught some kind of bug.
...I think it's a travel bug.

I've been so incredibly lucky to have the opportunity to call two continents and two countries my home- and two completely different countries at that; Someone once described South Africa to me as 'exotic' and Greece as 'wise and historical'. Does that make me historically wise and exotic? I'm not sure...

As many of you know, I'm born and bred in South Africa, but I've been fed a steady dose of Greek culture, which I've briefly mentioned here and here.

A fun fact about this blog is that it was conceived in Greece- albeit it was born in the most uncomfortable seat at the Doha airport whilst waiting for a flight transfer (but that's a whole other story). Hence, essentially, Social Spying's roots are based in olive oil and carvings of warriors and victory in marble. And, for the first time since its inception, myself and this blog, will be returning to the Mediterranean sea and the land of great food and equally impressive sandy (and sometimes stony) beaches- Greece.

I've had the opportunity to visit Greece almost every year since I was born. In just over a week, I'll be adding one more stroke to the building tally, by making what I think is my 15th (and longest) trip to Greece. I know that South Africa will always be 'home home' but I consider Greece to be another kind of home- maybe just one 'home' then?

I'll be in Athens- and trotting around some islands- for a total of two months. Let me repeat that: 2 MONTHS! I'm so incredibly lucky. I've experienced many more summers than I have winters because I'm always escaping from one hemisphere to the other just before the nail-biting, 8 cups of tea a day cold kicks in- like I'm about to do now.

Obviously, you're all coming with me. So stay tuned for summer, sun and a whole lot of fun.

What are your summer plans? Have you ever traveled to Greece? Is there anything you'd like to see/know about Greece on the blog?

Till next time-
Steph

  2. Hey - did I say that? The exotic South Africa and Wise and historic Greece? Maybe not, but it sounds exactly like something I would say ^^
I picture Greece with lots of white walls, very steep hills and steps and an old place almost falling apart. Like in the sisterhood of the travelling pants, or Mamma Mia!
Travelling is definitely one of the better bugs to catch ;) I absolutely love to travel but trying to find time and money is very hard. My plans for this summer (aside from working) are to travel to London, Spain, Edinburgh and Sligo(Ireland). I've visited all these places before except for Edinburgh. Greece would be an incredible place to see and I'll put it on my agenda for my future travels.
Hope you have a lovely time at your Home away from Home! ^_^

    1. It may have been you. I can't exactly remember...but it was someone who left me a comment.

I actually visited the island where Mama Mia was filmed in 2015- Skopelos. Unfortunately, the whole of Greece isn't like that. But there are many parts that come close!

It also sounds like you're due for some travelling! How exciting! They are such diverse cultures.

Yes! Greece is a must at some point, but till then, I'll send you Greece from my blog.

      Thanks M!

  3. I'd love to travel to Greece someday. But, it'll be awhile before I ever muster up enough to finally travel there, so the Greek Festival in town will have to do. I LOVE Greek food, don't you? Hopefully you have fun traveling (and be sure to send us frequent blog updates)!

    1. You have to visit one day. It would be very interesting to see how the food, culture and vibe at the festival compares to the real thing.

My diet is Greek food. And all bias aside, it's the best food.

I'll be sure to bring you to Greece with me, through the blog!

Thanks Abigail! I appreciate the comment.

  5. awwww so nice you will spend 2 months "on your other home"! You'll have a lot of fun, there's a lot to visit! Today I saw a video from a girl who stayed in a Greek island and it was so beautiful, I know just a few from this country and you can give me the opportunity to learn more!

P.S. If you visit ancient greek temple ruins or something related to mythology, please post about it! I really want to know more!

    1. I'm really looking forward to it, C!

I'd love to teach you more about Greece.

I've done my fair share of visiting temples and historical ruins...so I can't promise that. But, you never know where the Grecian wind blows, and if I end up at an ancient ruin, I'll let you know all about it!

      Thanks for the comment, C!

  6. I get what you mean when you say South Africa is home home and Greece other kind of home. That happens to me too! With Chile, being my home home and Peru my other home. I would love to go to Greece so much history and pretty places! And maybe show some of the places that are pretty and not too touristy

I don't really visit many tourist-y places anymore...so expect to see places from a local's perspective!
