14 Unusual Facts About February


February is here which means Ferris Wheel Day, Read A Book to your Child Day and of course, Valentines Day! To anyone who thought that they wouldn't be able to make it through Janu-worry, don't worry...because you made it! Now, only 11 more months to go before the year's done but let's not think that way.

I've compiled a list of historical happenings, great inventions and trivia trinkets that you can splur out and impress at any given moment this month- like maybe on a Valentine's date or at the Super Bowl?

1. February is the shortest month of the year, with either 28 or 29 days (depending on whether it is a leap year or not).

2. The month hasn't always been on the calendar. In 713 BC it was added to the Roman calendar but the amount of days in the month kept changing to the extreme that it once had 23 days in it. Then, Emperor Caesar set the dates of February, as we now know it to be, in stone.

3. The word February originates from the Latin word "Februum" which means purification. February was considered an unlucky month, by the Romans, and dedicated the month to honouring the dead and performing purification rituals.

4. For almost 200 years, again, thanks to the Romans, February was the last month of the year... until they decided to reshuffle things to the way we know them to be today.

5. February is often listed as one of the most frequently misspelled words in the English language.

6. In 1788, the steamboat was invented by John Fitch

7. In 1913, Grand Central Station, in the U.S. opens

8. In 1913, U.S. start income tax

9. In,1938,the movie 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs' is released

10. Shakespeare's play, 'Much Ado About Nothing' mentions the month February- the only play of his to do so.

11. This month is the only month that can pass without a full moon. (This will happen again in 2018)

12. It is celebrated as Black history Month, Bird Feeding Month, Canned food month, Chocolate Lovers month and potato lovers month (among many others)

13. The birthstone of those born in February is the amethyst which is said to symbolize humility, spiritual wisdom and sincerity.

14. Salad was invented this month

    1. You love a good salad then? I can't say I'm a fan. Although, i can be, when I'm in a 'type' of mood.

      I think Wednesday is probably most often spelled wrong, probably because it's used every week, where as February is needed once a year...for 28 days? Maybe not.
